The narrative follows her rebellious life of counterculture, sex, and success as a circus tightrope walker, but she is ultimately unable to escape the "ancestral ghosts" that haunt her. The story is framed by her hallucinatory journey to the Australia of her renegade ancestors, and she eventually returns home to confront the past through therapy sessions with these ancestral spirits.
