Smoky Dawson – A Life is the colourful autobiography of Herbert Henry “Smoky” Dawson, one of Australia’s most celebrated entertainers and a pioneer of Australian country music. Published by George Allen & Unwin in 1985, the book recounts Dawson’s extraordinary journey from his childhood and the hardships of the Depression era through his experiences in Army entertainment, rodeo and travelling shows, and ultimately to national and international fame. Dawson became a household name through his long-running radio program, The Smoky Dawson Show, and his famous character as Australia’s singing cowboy, accompanied by his beloved horse, Flash. His story also reflects the development of Australian popular entertainment across much of the twentieth century.
A particularly appealing feature of this edition is its rich visual presentation, with twelve full-colour plates and additional illustrations by the renowned Australian artist Pro Hart, who was a close friend and collaborator of Dawson. Hart’s distinctive artwork complements Dawson’s lively storytelling and brings to life the characters, landscapes and adventures described throughout the memoir. The book also carries an introduction by R. M. Williams, adding another distinctly Australian voice to this portrait of an iconic Australian entertainer.
