Wicked But Virtuous: My Life is the highly personal and unconventional autobiography of Mirka Mora, one of Australia’s most distinctive and beloved artists. Born in Paris in 1928, Mora recounts her extraordinary life from her childhood in wartime France, including the family’s narrow escape from Auschwitz, through her arrival in Melbourne in 1951 with her husband Georges and their young son. The book follows her emergence as an artist and her influential role in Melbourne’s cultural life, including the celebrated cafés and restaurants she established with Georges, which became meeting places for artists, writers and intellectuals.
Written in Mora’s distinctive, candid and often playful voice, the memoir is less a conventional autobiography than a vivid celebration of an unconventional life. She reflects openly on her art, lovers, family, friendships, restaurants and the many colourful personalities who entered her world, while exploring the ways in which personal experience and creativity continually informed one another. Richly illustrated with photographs and reproductions of her artwork, Wicked But Virtuous offers both an intimate portrait of Mora herself and a fascinating glimpse into Melbourne’s artistic and bohemian culture during the second half of the twentieth century.
