The story of an immigrant pioneer woman and her husband who settled in western Ohio as told in her own writings and drawings.
Liwwat (Elizabeth) was a German peasant farm girl who for some reason was chosen by the local Monastery Abbot to be his classics and art student and later chosen by the Oansbruck Cathedral to train as a midwife. She met her future husband “Natz” as a child. They secretly wed then planned & saved for their ship passage to Baltimore USA in the 1830’s.
Liwwat wrote and illustrated extensively throughout her life on their travels, their pioneer life, her midwife/ healer experiences and on her thoughts on myriad subjects.
The ship journey with complete list of belongings, oxen wagon trip across the Appalachian mountains, canoe trek to their homestead with maps are included. Detailed descriptions of the tools they hand made for daily life are illustrated and described. Immigrant superstitions and folk weddings as well as the herbs she used to heal are included.
A complete look into pioneer life on the 1830’s Ohio wilderness is artistically provided.
