Hardcover with dust jacket. Very good condition.

Saudi Arabia: Caught in Time 1861–1939 by Badr El-Hage is a richly illustrated historical work that uses rare early photographs to document the transformation of the Arabian Peninsula during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Drawing on photographs gathered from public and private archives across Europe and the Middle East, the book presents visual records of cities, landscapes, pilgrimage routes, tribal life, architecture, and political figures from a period preceding the modern development of Saudi Arabia. It highlights the work of pioneering photographers, including Mohammed Sadek Bey, who produced some of the earliest known photographs of the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Through its carefully selected images and accompanying historical commentary, the book provides a unique visual history of a society undergoing profound change, preserving scenes, buildings, and ways of life that have largely disappeared in the modern era. The result is both a valuable historical record and an introduction to the beginnings of photography in Arabia.
