Description

The Hotel Lutetia is one of Paris’s most iconic landmarks and the only grand hotel on the city’s Left Bank. Since opening its doors, it has been a gathering place for artists, writers, musicians, and political figures. André Gide dined here, James Joyce resided within its walls, and Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse were among its frequent guests. Yet beyond its cultural legacy lies a darker chapter in its history.

During the 1930s, the Lutetia became a refuge for intellectuals and political exiles fleeing Nazi Germany, many of whom hoped to build resistance to Hitler’s regime. Following the German occupation of Paris, however, the hotel was transformed into the headquarters of Nazi military intelligence, serving as a centre for identifying and persecuting enemies of the Reich. After the war, in 1945, it was repurposed once again—this time as a reception centre for survivors returning from concentration camps.

In Hotel Exile, Jane Rogoyska explores the human stories that unfolded within the hotel’s walls during these turbulent years. Focusing on people whose lives were shaped by war, displacement, and ideology, she reveals the personal struggles behind some of the twentieth century’s most devastating events. Rich in empathy and historical insight, the book offers a powerful portrait of resilience, loss, and survival on the margins of war.
