Soldiers Three and Other Stories by Rudyard Kipling is a collection of short stories set in British-ruled India, centred on the lives of three ordinary British soldiers—Mulvaney, Ortheris, and Learoyd—serving in the ranks of the Indian Army. Through their humorous banter, misadventures, and often poignant experiences, Kipling portrays the everyday realities of military life on the colonial frontier, blending comedy, camaraderie, hardship, and moments of moral reflection. The stories capture both the rough vitality of barracks life and the broader atmosphere of the British Empire in India, revealing Kipling’s keen ear for dialect and his sympathy for common soldiers, while also reflecting the imperial attitudes of his time.
*The presence of a swastika on the on an inside leaf has nothing to do with Nazism or fascism. Kipling began using the swastika—a symbol with ancient origins—long before it was appropriated by the Nazis. After the rise of the Nazis and the swastika’s association with fascism, Kipling reportedly insisted the symbol be removed from subsequent printings of his works to avoid any confusion or unintended association.
