The Broken Years: Australian Soldiers in the Great War by Bill Gammage is a landmark work of Australian military and social history, first published by Australian National University Press in 1974. It reconstructs the experiences of Australian soldiers in the First World War primarily through their letters and diaries, drawing on the records of about 1,000 members of the First Australian Imperial Force.
Gammage focuses less on military strategy than on the human experience of war—the expectations of Australian volunteers, their experiences at Gallipoli, in Egypt and Palestine, and on the Western Front, and the effects of combat on their attitudes toward war, home and Australia. The book is particularly significant for showing how the realities of the conflict contributed to changing Australian attitudes toward the British Empire and helped shape the developing Anzac tradition.
