The Innocent Artists: Student Art from Papua New Guinea by Catherine Baker, published by Blandford Press in 1980, documents the remarkable artistic abilities of students at Kerowagi High School in the Chimbu Province of Papua New Guinea. The book explores the cultural and historical background of the Chimbu people while focusing particularly on the students’ drawings and their individual approaches to artistic expression. Baker presents their work as especially striking because the students had received little or no formal training in drawing, yet demonstrated a strong and seemingly natural ability to create detailed and imaginative images.
A major strength of the book is its combination of visual material and cultural observation. It contains photographs, colour plates, numerous black-and-white illustrations, and a map, allowing readers to connect the students’ artwork with the environment and traditions of their community. The drawings are also notable because Chimbu Province did not have a strong traditional practice of drawing in the Western sense; instead, the students drew upon older cultural motifs while experimenting with new forms and media. In this way, Baker’s book provides not only a collection of student artwork but also an interesting record of creativity, cultural change, and the ways young people interpret their surroundings through art.
