The Peculiar Honeymoon and Other Writings is a 1986 anthology of 19 adult-oriented stories, articles and autobiographical pieces by Australian author Mary Grant Bruce, edited by Prue McKay. Published by McPhee Gribble in Melbourne, the collection is unusual within Bruce's bibliography because, unlike her famous Billabong novels, its contents were not written specifically for children.
The title story, “The Peculiar Honeymoon,” is autobiographical and recounts Bruce's 1914 honeymoon with Major George Evans Bruce, which was unexpectedly interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War when her husband was recalled to military service. Other pieces include “Port after Stormie Seas,” “A Rider of the Sixties,” “Smoke in January,” “Brittany Holiday,” “How I Became a Writer,” “The Amateur Woman Worker,” “Overtime for Wives,” “Daughters of Today,” “Bush Babies” and “Camping Out in Australia.” The collection consequently provides a broader picture of Bruce as a journalist, short-story writer and commentator on Australian life, rather than simply as the author of children's fiction.
