White Coolies is a compelling memoir by Australian nurse Betty Jeffrey, chronicling her harrowing experiences during World War II. In 1942, Jeffrey was among 65 Australian Army nursing sisters evacuated from Singapore aboard the Vyner Brooke, which was subsequently bombed and sunk by Japanese aircraft. Surviving the sinking, Jeffrey and other survivors reached Bangka Island, where 21 nurses were tragically massacred by Japanese soldiers. Jeffrey and the remaining nurses were taken as prisoners of war and endured over three years of captivity in brutal conditions on Sumatra. Despite the hardships, including malnutrition and disease, Jeffrey secretly kept a diary documenting their resilience and camaraderie, which later became White Coolies. The memoir not only serves as a testament to the courage and endurance of these women but also inspired the 1997 film Paradise Road.
